A pulmonary embolism is a serious, often fatal medical emergency. A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot blocks the pulmonary veins that connect the heart and lungs, obstructing blood flow. This blockage can cause portions of the lung to be starved of nutrients and die. Sometimes this blockage is painless, so it is important to seek medical attention after a car accident.
