I love a good smoothie recipe with greek yogurt. I love the creaminess that it imparts in a smoothie or shake.
It’s a high protein breakfast idea for practically anyone, and if it’s hearty enough, it’s even a great option for lunch. Here are some more lunch ideas that aren’t sandwiches.
And greek yogurt smoothie recipes make a great lactation snack or even the best pre game snack because they can be full of energy and important recovery nutrients!
While I love them during the day, I would sometimes even save half for my breastfeeding night snacks because they provide ample protein, which I definitely needed when nursing at night.
Smoothie recipes with yogurt have natural sources of protein, without the need for protein powder. And a slew of other nutritious ingredients!
A greek yogurt smoothie is a great vehicle for adding protein, calcium, Vitamin D and potassium.
When talking about running, calcium and Vitamin D are imperative for bone health!
Furthermore, post workout smoothies are a great part of any marathon or half marathon nutrition plan or post half marathon recovery because they offer so many nutrients.
Bone health is important in rectifying some of the side effects of relative energy deficiency in runners and preventing injuries, like stress fractures.
My goal today is to convert you to a greek yogurt smoothie lover, too because adding greek yogurt to a smoothie is my favorite thing to do.
Whether you’re looking for a post workout smoothie recipe to help you refuel or a healthy yogurt smoothie snack, you’ll find everything you need here.
I’ve rounded up over 30 of my favorite smoothie recipes with greek yogurt.
All have over 1/4 cup of yogurt, and most have at least 1/3-1/3 cup, meaning there’s generally at least 10 grams of protein per recipe, before accounting for the other ingredients.
This is important for meeting protein for runners high needs and macronutrients.
These smoothies are great ways to make sure you’re adequately fueling for your workouts.
Recommended Products for Greek Yogurt Smoothies
I also recommend many of these as smoothies for pregnancy because they are very nutrient dense.
If you’re adding a variety of fruits and vegetables, they can also be a great source of electrolytes for pregnancy, or even just a general daily addition for health and wellness resolutions.
Greek Yogurt Smoothie Recipes Recommended Ingredients
My tried and true greek yogurt smoothie ingredients and necessities:
- high powered blender or food processer
- ice or frozen fruit (blueberries)
- greek yogurt
- liquid of choice
- spinach or cauliflower (extra nutrients without the taste)
- banana
- hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds – I love to buy in bulk from Thrive Market
- flavorings – cinnamon, cocoa powder, nutmeg, turmeric, ginger, etc.
- pouches for taking them on the go
- Resuable storage bagsreusable storage bags or stasher bags for reducing waste
How To Make A Smoothie Recipe With Greek Yogurt
You no longer need to be intimidated about adding greek yogurt to your smoothie because all you have to do is scoop it and throw it in for an instant healthy protein smoothie.
A smoothie with greek yogurt is great to have on hand when you need a protein rich snack or healthy athlete snack.
And these are great as a homemade recovery drink for runners because you control what goes in them!
Making smoothies at home is super simple if you have a high speed blender. The ultimate question: Ice or frozen fruit?
Personally, I think frozen fruit is the best smoothie base, but sometimes I’ll use a combination of fruit and ice.
To make a smoothie with greek yogurt:
- Start with your ice or frozen fruits/vegetables
- Add in greek yogurt and any other ingredients (nuts, seeds, nut butter)
- Lastly, pour liquid(s) of choice in. There should be enough liquid to cover all of the frozen ingredients.
If you want to make a smoothie without milk or yogurt, you can use water, coconut water, milk substitutes, or even fruit juice.
Orange juice and pineapple juice are great for a tropical flavor, and beet juice (beets for runners) can be beneficial for performance.
What Should You Add To A Greek Yogurt Smoothie?
If you’re searching for how to make greek yogurt taste good, a smoothie is how and it all depends on the toppings.
Greek yogurt is full of protein, calcium, vitamin D and even the amino acid, leucine. When serving to kids, I use it as a source of protein for kids, without needing protein powder.
All of this means that greek yogurt in your workout smoothies will HELP you perform and recover better because high protein smoothies will be quickly absorbed post workout.
Here’s what I recommend for taste and nutrition in making the best greek yogurt smoothie recipe:
- 1-2 servings of fruit (bananas work well because they are naturally sweet with a neutral flavor)
- 1/3-1/2 cup greek yogurt
- 1 cup of milk of choice
- 1 serving of vegetables (optional) – greens work best
- Spices – like cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, etc
- Fat – nut butter, avocado
- protein powder (optional), but can help increase the protein if you want a protein shake with greek ygourt
- Ice
- Nuts and seeds – chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds (I order in bulk from Thrive Market)
Chia seeds are great for runners and offer so many extra micronutrients, like iron, calcium, magnesium and more.
And if you like an extra crunchy smoothie, like me, I like to add granola on top! My favorites are this maple cinnamon granola or high protein granola.
Greek Yogurt Smoothie FAQs
Can you make smoothies ahead of time?
Absolutely! Many times, I’ll combine the ingredients in my blender or a bag (minus the liquid) and put in the fridge overnight. Then, just blend in the morning. You can also pre-blend all of your ingredients and then transfer them to single serving bags to freeze for when you need them. In the morning, add some more liquid, and it’s ready!
Do you have to use plain yogurt for a greek yogurt protein shake?
I typically prefer plain greek yogurt to minimize the sugar, but if you prefer a strawberry greek yogurt smoothie or a vanilla yogurt smoothie recipe, you can use flavored yogurt options.I typically find that all of the other ingredients cover the taste of the tart greek yogurt, but my taste buds are also accustomed to eating plain greek, full fat yogurt.
How to make a yogurt smoothie thicker
Adding more or less liquid can make your greek yogurt smoothie thicker or less thick, depending on your desired consistency.Personally, I love thick smoothie recipes, and sometimes even transfer them to a bowl, like this strawberry banana smoothie bowl, and add toppings.
Changing up the proportion of ice can also make your smoothie thicker or thinner. You can make a smoothie without ice. It all depends on your texture preference.
What other liquids can you use besides milk?
If you want to make a smoothie without milk or yogurt, you can use water, coconut water, milk substitutes, or even fruit juice. Orange juice and pineapple juice are great for a tropical flavor.
Green Smoothie Recipes
If you’re in the mood for a healthy spinach smoothie, these are for you.
Spinach is a nutrient-dense addition that never changes the taste of the smoothie, though it will make your smoothie a delightful green color.
It’s my favorite neutral add-in for extra nutrients, especially for kids, since you don’t taste it. In fact, a smoothie with peanut butter and spinach is my favorite way to hide “strong” flavors in smoothies.
These are also my favorite recommendations for healthy smoothies for pregnancy.
You don’t need to ask yourself, “are green smoothies healthy?,” once you see these ingredients and flavors.
Adding greens to apple smoothies with greek yogurt is a great way to use fall apples, too!
