When Should I Wear Compression Sleeves For Lymphedema? (2024)

When Should I Wear Compression Sleeves For Lymphedema? (1)

Do you have lymphedema and need to wear compression sleeve(s)?

Are you wondering when you should wear them?

Do you want to make an informed, intelligent decision?

Compression Treatment For Lymphedema

The treatment you receive for lymphedema can vary in different ways including compression and is determined by where you have the swelling.

You get a build up of lymph fluid which causes swelling and the compression applies pressure to this area, which can aid in the reduction of the swelling.

There are different levels of compression which should be determined by your doctor or health care provider.

This pressure that the compression provides helps the fluid flow through your vessels.

Your muscles have to work against this extra pressure which helps the fluid to drain.

Compression Sleeves

Compression sleeves help to prevent the condition from worsening.

Your compression sleeve should:

  • Cover the swollen section of your body
  • Allow range of motion
  • Be snug fitting against your body
  • Be supportive but not overly restrictive
  • Customized for you
  • Be changed to a new one approx. four to six months from initial use

Your compression sleeve should be worn during the daytime hours and removed at night time.

Make sure to put them on when you first wake up in the morning when the limb is at its smallest.

It should be fairly easy to put them on and take them off.

You want your skin to be clean and dry when you put them on, and you can use rubber gloves to help grip them and avoid any snags.

Then after you have put the sleeve on you can use the glove to smooth out any wrinkles.

At night, to remove the sleeve, simply fold it back onto itself to your elbow, then pull it off the rest of the way.

If you experience any of the following, make sure to contact your doctor or health care provider right away:

  • Uncomfort or severe pain
  • Numb feeling
  • Tingling sensation

Compression Sleeve Care

It is best practice to have 2 sleeves to alternate wearing.

While you are wearing one you can properly wash and care for the other.

Always use a mild detergent and dry the sleeve on a flat surface avoiding any direct heat.

Make sure to get properly fitted for your sleeve by a reputable supplier with certified fitters on staff to help you.

After you have been provided with your sleeves, make sure to contact them with any questions or concerns.
