How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal — Semper Laser (2023)

We get asked a lot about how to best prepare for your first laser hair removal appointment, so we wanted to put together this easy list of things to do and things to avoid!

Things to do before laser hair removal:

  1. Shower. While the treatment area itself will be cleaned before treatment begins, it is a good idea to have a bath or shower before coming in - remember no lotions, oils, or fragrances on the treatment area though!

  2. Check your skincare and medications - some medications and skincare can make skin more photosensitive, like retinoids and some antibiotics. Always tell your tech exactly what you are taking – including birth control and vitamins. We want to make sure we’re safe to treat you!

  3. Shave! While other forms of hair removal are not a good idea before laser hair removal, shaving the area completely before treatment is recommended to avoid irritation and make the treatment easier to complete.

  4. Wear something comfortable. While we know our clients love to look their best, it is important that you are comfortable in the procedure and during the day after treatment.

  5. Relax! Our technicians will walk you through the whole process so there will be no unwelcome surprises.

Things to avoid when preparing skin for laser hair removal:

  1. Plucking, waxing, epilating etc. - laser hair removal works by targeting the hair follicle, which means the hair follicle needs to be there when the treatment takes place. Plucking and other similar hair removal takes the whole hair out and that means that the root cannot be targeted by the laser.

  2. Cosmetic enhancements - avoid having your Botox, microdermabrasion, dermal fillers etc. for at least 14 days before treatment.

  3. Tanning - avoid sun exposure and sunbed tanning for at least 2 weeks before your laser hair removal treatment. UV exposure can increase the risks associated with laser so even a minor sunburn can mean a treatment needs to be delayed.

  4. No moisturizer, lotions, makeup, or skincare the day of your appointment - the treatment area needs to be completely clear of any substances before treatment can take place. This includes deodorant!
